Benannt nach einer dunklen Kaschemme in einer mittelgroßen Westdeutschen Landeshauptstadt, kommt mit einer ungewohnten Besetzung daher. Zwei Kontrabässe und ein Saxophon wirbeln durcheinander, bieten mysteriöse Klangflächen und überraschende Impulse. Die Kompositionen und freien Improvisationen ergänzen sich und bedienen sich unterschiedlicher Stilmittel aus Jazz, Klassik, Neuer Musik, oder Noise.
PIERO BITTOLO BON – SPELUNKER
Piero Bittolo Bon – augmented alto saxophone, amplifiers, electronics
SPELUNKER is the solo project of Piero Bittolo Bon, a multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Ferrara, Italy. Using a custom made microphone system attached at different locations on his alto saxophone, Bittolo Bon captures unearthly resonances and vibrations from his acoustic instrument, channeling and sculpting these frequencies into trance-like polyrhythms, dreamy grooves and immersive soundscapes. Without the use of looping pedals or computer manipulation, Bittolo Bon feeds these captured tones into synthesizers, drum machines, and stompboxes in real time, further manipulating the raw material in his improvised performances. The layered and kaleidoscopic effect of his in-the-moment composing creates a sound world that conjures an elusive and seductive folk music orchestra from another planet. This work is documented in his eponimous digital album edited and curated by Maurice Louca, a key player in the Cairo and Berlin experimental music scenes (Kharkana, Dwarfs of East Agouza, Elephantine).

Norwegian bass player Dan Peter Sundland has gathered three of Berlin’s most prominent improvisers in his Home Stretch. The quartet combines chamber musical timbres and sensitivities with the immediacy and freedom of free jazz and improvised music through Sundland’s compositions sprinkled with more open sections. Propelled forwards by Steve Heather’s sensitively messy beats and Dan Peter Sundland’s distinct, electroacoustic bass sound, piano guru Antonis Anissegos and saxophone giant Philipp Gropper perform a neck-breaking, swirling dance through deceptive 12-tone matrices, Morton Feldman-like clusters and layered tonalities. The band connects through combining innovative intuition, deep listening and timbral awareness in what was already in their premiere concert described in the press as “near-perfect communication”.

Im Rahmen einer Konzertreihe, in der sich Michael Griener und Jan Roder sowohl mit bereits bestehenden Bands als auch mit Erstbegegnungen im Berliner Au Topsi Pohl präsentierten, stand Taiko Saito im November 2021 erstmals nur mit Bass und Schlagzeug auf einer öffentlichen Bühne. Die gemeinsam entstandene Musik ermöglichte es allen dreien, Facetten ihrer musikalischen Persönlichkeiten zum Ausdruck zu bringen, die zuvor nur selten zum Vorschein gekommen waren.

Silke Langes Interesse gilt der Neuen Musik, improvisierten Musik, Klangkunst sowie genreübergreifenden Projekten. In ihren Solosets fließen ihre unterschiedlichen musikalischen Interessen zusammen und bilden ein eigenes, waberndes Klanggewebe.

Re: 2nite is a new Berlin-based quartet that uses improvisation and composition to create a journey into the many rhythms and movements of the city. The trumpet and alto saxophone weave intricate and playful melodies that harmonise and dizzy the listener, while the bass and drums pound out pulses that assure a rhythmic organisation and then
break it apart. It all turns upside down like the chaos of rush hour as the horns rattle and pop, creating a carpet of percussive noise. The drums become an expansive texture of metallic sounds, while the bass swirls in a circular, serene universe. Around the next corner is a hypnotic dance party, a construction site, or the wind rustling the leaves in a city park. Re: 2nite embrace and play with this kind of imagery in their music, taking the audience along for the ride.

Only With You is an electronic music duo formed by Eliad Wagner and Korhan Erel, both highly experienced performers in the field of experimental electronic music. Their chosen tools are digital FM synthesis, physical touch controllers, feedback/cybernetic circuits, analogue modular synthesis, sequencers, delay lines, ring modulators and mixers, which they use to explore various cultural niches, from the curiosities of early sci-fi music, contemporary music and free improvisation to dub and dancefloor styles.

Die Harfenistin, Improvisateurin und Komponistin Kathrin Pechlof ist eine der wenigen Instrumentalistinnen, die den Klang der Harfe in den zeitgenössischen Jazzkontext integriert. Filigran und doch direkt, malerisch und zugleich immer klar und weit entfernt vom Engels-Image des Harfenklangs ist das Spiel von Kathrin Pechlof, das sich einfühlsam auch in die kompliziertesten Improvisationskontexte fügt und der Musik eine neue Dimension verleiht. Solo erschafft sie eine anmutige Klangwelt, die sich nicht in Schönheit erschöpft, sondern auch das Wagnis niemals scheut.

Improvisation ist nicht vorausplanbar – sie springt einen einfach an. Gerhard, Sunk und Alberto sitzen hier wie vor’m Tiger – ohne Stäbe dazwischen. Geschöpft aus der Tradition und verquickt mit den B-Sides ihrer Jugend fließen ihre originären Spielweisen virtuos zusammen. Dieser Unplanbarkeit sind auch bewusst zugelassene musikalische Risikobereiche geschuldet. Gerade diese erzeugen die Authentizität, durch die die Musik zum Erlebnis wird und ihre eigene Qualität bekommt.
DJ illvibe/Vincent von Schlippenbach, Bereits mit vierzehn Jahren begann er als Hip-Hop DJ in Clubs aufzulegen, fokussierte sich aber bald schon auf die Möglichkeiten, die Turntables als Musikinstrument zu verwenden. 1999 sammelte er erste Erfahrungen in eher Groove-orientierten Bands wie Seeed und Lychee Lassi, parallel dazu spielte er freie, improvisierte Musik mit u.a. Aki Takase, Carlos Bica, Paul Lovens, Farida Amadou und Christian Lillinger.Seit 2006 ist er Mitglied des Produzententrios The Krauts, das urbanen Sound mit experimentellen Elementen kombiniert und u.a. Musik für Künstler wie Miss Platnum, Peter Fox und Marteria produziert und geschrieben hat. Ausgangspunkt und Inspiration für all seine Arbeit sind dabei stets Schallplatten, die manipuliert und als Samples miteinander kombiniert werden.

FIELD sei „gedacht für alle Menschen, die da Ohren haben zu hören“, schrieb Tim-Caspar Böhme in der TAZ zum Album “Heal The Rich”. Das Quartett um den Berliner Saxophonisten Uli Kempendorff spielt Stücke aus der Feder des Bandleaders. “Someone Talked” (ENJA) ist die dritte Platte von Uli Kempendorff‘s FIELD und die erste in der Neubesetzung mit Christopher Dell am Vibraphon, Peter Bruun am Schlagzeug und Jonas Westergaard am Kontrabass. In dieser Formation spielt die Band schon seit 2018 Konzerte und hat in dieser Zeit eine von Feinsinn und Kraft geprägte gemeinsame Sprache gefunden.

Paolo Pascolo, Gabriele Cancelli and Giorgio Pacorig began collaborating with Tristan Honsinger in 2016 by playing compositions written by Tristan during the time he lived in Trieste. Starting with the idea of rotating roles and hierarchies during performance, over time they have consolidated an original “sound” in which compositions and improvisations merge into a dreamlike and surreal sound stream that could be the soundtrack of a Kaurismäki and Fellini film. The record work Tristan & the Sagonauts released in 2018 on the independent label Dobialabel and printed on music cassette is a document of this. What is being presented at Jazz & Experimental in Berlin 2024 is a tribute to Tristan Honsinger and his music but also the realization of a new project, the one that Tristan had in mind in the last days of his life, and which included the presence of Ziga Ipavec on drums.
