Improvisation is music meant for the moment, and now, through recordings, seeks to
recreate the concert’s atmosphere. Jazz, whether live or recorded doesn’t exist in a
vacuum. It’s never detached from its surroundings, never just a sequence of sounds. This
music resists being pigeonholed. It sparks the imagination and, in doing so, our humanity.
What more could one ask for? Cool? Bop? The drawers stay closed. The label printer is
out of order. This quartet knows no hierarchies, no “leader,” but instead operates in a
deeply democratic way from the first notes to the blazing finale. Conclusion: Jazz at its
best. An all-star band then? Schlapitzki doesn’t believe in stars. “Berlin Reductionism”?
